Like Mother/Father, Like Daughter/Son?

Soo...after having this conversation with a few of my friends, I decided to post the topic on here to get a public opinion...

Unfortunately, not everyone is able to grow up in a two-parent household, or have the luxury to witness their grandparents celebrate their 30th anniversary. While I have no qualms about my childhood (I actually liked having two different houses I could call mine), recently I've started to think if it has had any impact on my views of relationships (even if its a subconscious one).

So, enligh10 me...how has your upbringing (i.e. childhood, familial relationships, values, etc.) shaped your views of relationships?

Childhood Obsesity: Who's to Blame?

Over the past 20 years, the rates of obesity, particularly childhood obesity, have doubled! Obesity is defined by body mass index (BMI), a measure of body mass based on the proportionality of height and weight. According to the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Disease (NIDDK), "a BMI of 18.5 to 24.9 is considered healthy; a BMI of 25 to 29.9 is considered overweight; and a BMI of 30 or more is considered obese." By this measure, about 1/3 of Americans are overweight and 1/3 of them are obese. More specifically, the famed National Health and Nutrition Examination Study (NHANES) reports that about 16% of children and adolescents aged 6-19 are obese.

Who is to blame for the growing rates of childhood obesity? According to the state of South Carolina, parents are to blame... and should consequently be prosecuted! Check the vid below:

Coveting Oneself: Is Abstinence Obsolete Today?

This may simply be a personal observation, but I'm wondering if abstinence is still relevant in young society. It seems that there are few virgins left that are not married that is. I pass no judgement either way, I can't. I was just contemplating how much society has changed and what our social cues are. Music, movies and other media channels promote a culture of pre-marital sex (Birthday Sex keeps playing through my mind and I swear Jeremih is 15). What are your thoughts on our sexed up society and our individual roles as players in a huuuuge swingers club.

Is Faith Enough?

In the latest issue of Essence, TD Jakes wrote a short article ("Get Lifted Out of Harm's Way" I don't believe this is available online) questioning if his advice for women to just keep praying for their marriage and abusive husbands actually made the women feel trapped in an unsafe marriage. I thought this was an interesting topic...maybe not in the same context of marriage but just in any stressful or tough situations in life. This just makes me question, just how far can faith go before the individual needs to take action? Can it sometimes get in the way of progress?
